Keep a Hold of Your Hat

Girl with boater hat
Dress – Simple Thrift
Everything else – Vintage

These were fun to take! I spent a good half hour outside doing all sorts of silly jumps and run-ins, and I didn’t feel embarrassed doing it either because I used a tripod and hid myself behind the trees that surround a pond near my house. Success! Well, pretty much. None of the jump shots really turned out but there’s always next time.

These are the boots I found at the car boot. They’re big and clunky, perfect for juxtaposing with floaty dresses. I have no idea how to actually keep the boater hat on my head. There’s nowhere to attach kirby grips and the elastic strap just looks silly. Any suggestions?

  1. I realllly love these! That hat is loooovely!
I have the same problem with my little boater hat.
One of my dress hats have little combs sewn into them
and adhere quite nicely. I was planning on sticking a couple
of those into my boater hat.

    xx

  2. I love those boots! You looks amazing here, such pretty photos. And the location is lovely! x

  3. Such lovely photos, and an adorable outfit to boot!

To keep the hat in place – could you try a hat pin on each side? Or maybe sew some grips to the underside of the rim? Hhhmmm!

  4. Wonderful outfit! I love your hat- I just purchased one of my own and am having some problems keeping mine on my head too! Unexpected gusts of wind have left me running down the street after my poor little hat! Maybe (as someone said in another comment) you could try adding some hair comb/slides to each side, so that when you put it on the combs secure it into your hair? :) x

  5. love the boater hat! I am always a sucker for them. When i was in Japan last month all the girls had them…it made me dig my old one out i got from a charity shop for 50p ;)
    xx

  6. I have the exact same problem! Crazy. I wore my new boater for the first time last Friday and man, it was a task, because it kept trying to fly off my head… damn windy San Francisco. I had to hold it in place for the whole day. Boo. I guess as someone suggestion, glue the combs in the hat and keep it locked with your hair?

You look so beautiful in these photos. They look like a fashion editorial! Love them so much!!! :)

  7. I love the hat! Was having the same problem with one of mine, and my ever-helpful mama told me to tuck the elastic in under your hair behind your head so pretty hats stay on and you can't see the elastic… it might work for yours too! ^_^

  8. you are adorable. i love these photos. i'd love to see a close up of that dress!

  9. These photos are absolutely delightful :) that little hat made me smile. and i have no clue how to keep them there either! maybe tape? :P

    xx

  10. These photographs are absolutely magical. I couldn't think of a better background or better outfit.

    BRILLIANT!

  11. i found a pair of black boots on saturday for $1.50.
i have been wearing them ever since.

did you try bobby pins for the hat?
you have to stick them through the straw and then pin them to your hair…it might damage the hat a little, but you should give it a try.

  12. How lovely is your blog? I only just discovered it. :)

It depends on the straw of the hat but you could maybe stick kirby grips through the hat? That's what I do with my battered old straw hat at festivals!

  13. Aww man, these pictures are so lovely!! You're so cute ! I love the outfit–boots like that with socks are my very favorite and the boater's so cute! I have a boater, but it's a tad too big for my head! I wish I could help you with your hat, but I've always wondered that myself about all the old hats–I always hear bobby pins, but when I try it never seems to work out… I'm probably just doing it wrong, though! xx

  14. Beautiful!!! Boaters are certainly no good for windy Easter weekends, I had the same problem. :) xx

  15. agreed on the hat pins! you may have to wear you hair/half your hair up, but a very long one should work…

And dear me, your hair is just gorgeous.

  16. Oh man. I love these pictures so much! That dress! Those shoes! with those socks! Seriously dying over each item individually and how well they look together too!

  17. this is the most pretty set of images ever,
and the dress is too die for.
    and the hat, adorable.
and come to think of it, the shoes and the bag are pretty perfect too!
    beautiful location!

  18. This is so beautiful, reallly love your blog, pictures are adorables and i love wes anderson's film fantastic Mr Fox.

    Im following you :)

  19. Gorgeous pics Hannah… they look like they could be straight out of Lula! I recently thrifted a similar little vintage straw hat with a black velvet bow but I have yet to attempt wearing it. I was thinking I would use the elastic strap over the back of my head like a headband but hidden under my hair like one of the other commenters suggested. I'll have to let you know how it goes, hehe :)

  20. Oh my gosh, I love your boater hat! I've been looking for one just like it! These are lovely pictures, I adore your dress as well!

  31. dang you have some nice hairs. i really like your boater hat! i think you just have to keep it for wind-less days? maybe a bobby pin or 15?

  36. The hat you have on may be called a merry widow sailor hat, and it like a boater/skimmer can be difficult to keep on. Some women pin them in their hair. Some used to have clips that clipped the hat to one’s suit or a string that went around the neck. Stay out of those big winds :)
